Stop Congress From Taking Your Pets
As a breader and a pet owner there are issues that can not be ignored.

STOP
The Python Ban Senate Bill S.373
Did you know that there is a bill pending in the United States Senate that aims to ban the import, interstate trade, and interstate transport of some of our most beloved pet pythons and boas?
The proposed legislation will add nine species of constrictors as injurious species to the Lacey Act, making it a Federal offense to buy, sell, or transport across state lines some of the most common and desirable varieties of pythons and boas. In its current form it includes 4 pythons, 4 anacondas, and ALL boa constrictors, but it will not stop here. The issue of the Burmese python becoming established in the Everglades is very real, but this is a local issue. Not a national issue. Are we going to let the U.S. Senate decide what we can keep as pets, where we can get them from, and to whom we can sell them? Or are we going to fight back? Please take this opportunity to contact your Senators and let them know that S.373 affects more than just Florida. The livelihood of tens of thousands of Americans is at stake and a $3 billion industry would be decimated by irresponsible legislation such as this.
The Facts:
- If passed, this bill would make it a federal offense to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase these animals internationally or across state lines. This includes moving with your pets and seeking out-of-state veterinary care.
- The USGS's report on the viability of large constrictors as invasive species (on which this bill is based) has been refuted by an independent panel of biologists and herpetologists as unscientific. In their letter to Congress, they state "as written, this document is not suitable as the basis for legislative or regulatory policies, as its content is not based on best science practices, it has not gone through external peer-review, and it diverts attention away from the primary concern."
- The US Chamber of Commerce states that "As written, S.373 would not achieve its stated goal of addressing the problem of feral pythons in the Everglades. It would, however, have a tremendous impact on the trade of captive bred reptiles in the US and abroad including a number of pythons and Boa constrictor... S.373 if passed would be devastating."
